Homemade Pizza With Gifappeltjie Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 500 g all-purpose flour

  • 325 ml warm water (around 40°C)

  • 7 g active dry yeast

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp olive oil


Instructions:

  • Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.


  • Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.


  • Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.


  • First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.


  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 250°C. If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it heats up.


  • Prepare the Toppings: While the dough is rising, prepare the toppings:

  • 150 g feta cheese, crumbled

  • A handful of fresh basil leaves

  • 200 g cherry tomatoes, halved

  • Shape the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide it into two equal portions for two medium pizzas or use the entire dough for one large pizza. Roll out the dough to your desired thickness.


  • Add the Toppings: Place the rolled-out dough on a baking sheet or a pizza peel if using a pizza stone. Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese evenly over the dough. Add the cherry tomatoes and scatter the basil leaves on top.


  • Bake the Pizza: Transfer the pizza to the oven. Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is slightly melted.


  • Serve: Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve.
