Ingredients:
For the Bread:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary (plus extra sprigs for garnish)
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme
For the Spicy Glaze:
- ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp Jissie Sussie Chili Oil (adjust to taste)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 red chili pepper, finely chopped (adjust for heat)
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar.
- Add the warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients.
- Mix until the dough starts to come together, then knead in the chopped rosemary and thyme.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
2. Shape the Bread:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface.
- Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
3. Bake the Bread:
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Once the dough has risen, use a sharp knife to make shallow slashes across the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
4. Prepare the Spicy Glaze:
- In a small saucepan, combine the balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, and Jissie Sussie Chili Oil.
- Add the minced garlic and chopped red chili pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently.
- Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
5. Glaze the Bread:
- Once the bread has cooled slightly but is still warm, brush the spicy glaze generously over the top and sides of the loaf.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds and garnish with fresh rosemary sprigs.
6. Serve:
- Slice the bread and serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy it on its own or as a side with your favorite meal.
